The War Council at Marienburg was gathered. Most of the Altdorf band was present as well together with Baron von Stauffer.
Von Stauffer was the first to speak. "I must have immediate military assistance to defend Fauligmere . Dark Elves may reach our village any time now. The matter is urgent.
A fat Marienburg noble commented “Fauligwhere, I have never seen a single coin of taxes from such a place, why waste efforts in a village that barely exists in our ledgers? We should be more concerned with the lack of trade the over the last many days. Not a single ship as docked with new goods!”
A Merchant Lord in flashy colors inquired. “What ship was the last to arrive, and when excatly?”
The Captain of the River Watch had been leaning against the wall. “That was Witch Hunter Tobias Folkvanger and his retinue, the worst of his kind. He only had a brief report of a victory against the Skaelings up north before he departed towards Altdorf. But that was three days ago. Not a single ship has docked since, and as you know we have yet to hear from our coastal patrols”
The Merchant Lord took on a grim expression. “Broken trade routes can mean only one thing… invasion”. He turned to the Altdorf band. “Tell me more of the secret passage”
After a lengthy explaining from the Altdorf band it was decided… The Fauligmere had to be defended, and the Mouth of Moor collapsed!
The Master Engineer was outraged. "But there is no way we can make it into the tunnel, it will be heavily guarded even if they send an advance force to take Fauligmere and we bypass their line!
Von Stauffer enquired: “But can’t we just blast it with cannons?”
The Master Engineer pondered that. “I suppose if we can hit the weak points in the construction with a cannon ball, then the tunnel would collapse, but even an dwarven cannon would not be able to make such a hit”
A young gunner called Luke commented. “I used to shoot wombats at night with the great cannon back at the gunnery academy in Nuln. This would not be much different.”
People nodded. “Ok it seems we have a plan then”
As the Altdorf band left the war council to prepare an old friend Zara Bok, nearly bumped into Marcus. “Marcus! I have been looking for you everywhere! Ranalds Luck that you are not in Altdorf already. Listen. You are in great danger, Tobias Folkvanger and Willi Ziege took a boat towards Altdorf to hunt you all down I think. I and a handful of men, who kept their sanity are all that’s left of the Grevenfelds Company. What are you doing here in Marienburg??”

Dark Elf Deployment
Nemiah’s voice was thick with loathing as she issues the orders: “Markith, you and your broken hearts will take position on the far side of the river. Advance forward and destroy anything on the opposing hill with bolts. Oh yeah Markith, I’m not sure how how my Khanites view a forbidden male sorcerer within though house. I guess your best option is a proper demonstration of power lest you will likely be flayed tomorrow for your heretical ways”
Markith brought 11 of his crossbow elves and 5 trusted dark riders. If they could clear the river patch, they would be in a prime position.
On the Fauligmere side of the river, Nemiah’ and her 30 witch elves cast evil glances in between their frenzy. In front of them 20 Cosairs ready to advance on enemy gunlines and protected by their heavy sea cloaks.
In the swamp shades were hidden making up a total of 18 very skilled scouts. Hopefully there would no resistance within the marshes.
Arrival of the Empire
As the Altdorf Band arrived together with the Grevenfeld Company and the Fauligmere Defenders, Ziegfried had already worked hard to set up barricades. Tension rose as this did not suit the plans made in Marienburg. Wolfgang raised his voice and it seemed as the sun disappeared for a moment. “These barricades are useless there! We need forward deployment to ever reach the mouth of morr!”
A large horde of Marienburg Halberdiers sponsored by the merchant guild took position within the small house by the swamp. Eldred von Stauffer and Brother Maynard commanded a large horde of Marienburg Swordsmen placed to defend the Von Stauffer mannor. An impressive line of gunmen took position near the rivertrap together with Wolfgang Koommezzell and a Bright Wizard Tim the Enchanter. A wizard the Altdorf band rescued from an evil bird ritual in the sewers.
On the far side of the river an odd gathering lined up: The Grevenfeld Company joined by Ziegfried and Marcus Strauss. Behind them Krieger’s Zealots and behind them Piet van Palin and some bog hunters.
After deployment it was then Marcus Strauss noticed something in the water… tentacles seemed to feel their way up through the river! It could only mean one thing: “THE KRAKEN!”
Dark Elf Turn 1 – Forward! Shoot!!!
Nemiah commanded her forces forward. Cosairs moved in on the gun line aided by a Banner of Swiftness. Nemiah’s witch elves just behind. In the swamp, the scouts took positions to fire, and some moved up to block the halberdiers from exiting the house. Markith’s Crossbowme and dark riders together with the kraken.
Then followed Markith’s incantations. With a plea to the Mistress of a Thousand Cuts, Markith conjured up a storm of magical swords upon the gun line. Several men were shredded to bits and soon followed by a hail of arrows mainly focused on the same unit.
Empire Turn 1 – I have the power!!
Two boats arrived and deployed Mortars on the river trap hill. The The Grevenfeld Company charged forward towards the dark riders, but soon realized they were well out of range. Marienburg Swordsmen moved forward towards the witch elves.
Now Wolfgang summoned all his power and uttered the incantations for the Purple Sun of Xereus. His arms raised and power building…. Tim whispered:“No, wait, I don’t think that word is right…..” with a booming voice Wolfgang unleashed the raw power Amethyst Magic and a Colossal orb of purple-edged darkness materialized around him. Unable to escape its touch he and a few gunmen were turned into inert and unfeeling crystal!
Despite the casualties, the gunline managed to severely wound the Krakan.
Dark Elf Turn 2 – Charge!!
Dark Riders charge the Grevenfeld Company, but are cut down by Ziegfried and the Greatswords. The Cosairs charge the gunline, but take 5 casualties during the charge and change their mind fleeing.
Witch Elves move forward and so does the Krakan. In the meantime the dark elf fleet is making its way up the river towards the river trap.
Markith summons his power, but all his efforts are efficiently dispelled by Tim the Bright Wizard. He curses and instead orders his unit: “FIRE AT WILL!!”
The The Grevenfeld Company and the Gunmen take some casualties under yet another round of missile fire.
Empire Turn 2 – Tooot! Tooot!
Marcus Strauss has a brainfart and suffers from stupidity. He orders his unit: "Uhh Forward!!!. No Wait! Uhm… " and the The Grevenfeld Company advance in a confused manner.
The steam tank arrives and drives forward to support the gunmen. It fires the cannon at the Kraken but overshoot and the shot lands on the far side of the river. Tim runs into the temple of Manann. Tim has full control of the winds of magic and manage to take out an entire unit of shades with fireballs and several witch elves with a flurry of incandenscent missiles.
Both Mortars fire at the witch elves. One shot misses, but the second hits home taking out an impressive 10 witch elves, who are blasted to bits. Nemiah screams with rage as her sisters are killed.
Dark Elf Turn 3 – Kraken Feeding Time
The Kraken charge Piet van Palin and his boghunters. No match for such a beast, most are eaten or crushed by its massive tentacles. It surges forward into the mortar crew.
The witch elves build up with rage, charge Von Stauffer’s swordmen, but fail to reach them. The Cosairs rally behind the witch elves.
Markith target the confused Grevenfeld Company with another Bladewind and Zara Bok and her company are torn apart by spinning swords and knives. Markith then points to Ziegfried. His crossbowmen grins wickedly to the sound of their repeater crossbows “Thud! Thud! Thud!” as they make Bretonian Cheese out of the knight. With a last yell of defiance and the name of his love on his lips he slides off his saddle. Hanging from his trusty warhorse, the animal manage to drag him into the swamp.
Remaining units takes some missile fire.
The dark elf skiffs advanced down the river.
Empire Turn 3 – The Age of Steam
“Noooooo!!”. Marcus Strauss looked at the remains of Zara Bok. He reached down in the shredded meat and grabbed her pendant. Eager to avenge Zara Bok, Marcus Strauss charged Markith and his Broken Heart Repeater Crossbows, in this fight he face the unit champion in a duel, that would come to last quite a while.
Chilled by Markith’s sorcery, the gunmen are unable to fire this round. The mortar misfired and lost a crew.
None of Tim’s magic seems to work this turn, but the Marienburg swordmen charged the witch elves together with the steam tank!. The charge is devastating to the elves and the stream tank basically rolled over the unit. The witch elves stood their ground however.
Dark Elf Turn 4 – Take The Hill
The Cosairs repositioned themselves bracing the oncoming swordsmen and steamtank. Tim was shot by a hail of bolts and fell out of the window at the top floor. His body impaled. Marcus Strauss Continued his efforts against the broken hearts and almost caused them to flee. The Kraken surged into the remaining mortar and wiped out the shocked crew.
All witch elves were killed by the Swordmen, but Nemiah defiently stood her ground (double 1 !).
Empire Turn 5 – Kill the Witch!
Von Stauffer and Nemiah engaged in a duel. Stauffer was wounded but managed to finally kill Nemiah!
Steam Tank moved forward and shot at the Cosairs.
Dark Elf Turn 5 – Evading the Trap
With the Kraken dwelling on top of the river trap, the dark elf fleet safely moved through the passage.
The Broken Hearts managed to win the fight against Marcus, causing him to flee and to be run over by the cruel dark elves.
Empire Turn 6 – Sound the Retreat!!!
Realizing that it was now impossible to stop the dark elf fleet, Eldred von Stauffer sounded the horn of retreat, followed by a squark from Von Gemylte. The remaining soldiers scattered through the marshes through Marienburg.
Dark Elf Turn 6 – Prepare for House Shar’La
With the resistance broken, the dark elves placed lines of repeater bolt throwers further up the river, gunning down many of the fleeing Fauligmere villagers. The Cauldron of Blood was set up at the town square and before sun set it would overflow and spill into the streets. Slaves were taken and defense set up. Fauligmere would become the staging ground for what would be known as the House Shar’La Invasion!
With his powers of sorcery proven, Markith would for the time being have the respect of his house. The River was open for his house. No doubt his mistress would be pleased but now there was something he had to deal with by himself…
